Hello Pocock Parents!

I hope everyone has enjoyed our very snowy weekend! Hard to believe today that spring rowing season is right around the corner.

I wanted to give everyone some information about what I know thus far about the Spring season. Please remember that things can change and we will update you all at the parent meeting in February about any changes.

Probably most importantly, is the anticipated schedule of meetings, regattas and events.

Spring Junior Schedule

February 4^th – Ergomania

February 6^th – Spring Practice begins (Everyone)

February 7^th- All Parent Meeting 6:30pm

March 10 – Ergathon Fundraiser (Everyone)

March 10 Evening – Pocock Junior Community Social

March 17^th – Green Lake Novice regatta (Novice)

March 24 & 25 – Lake Stevens Novice Regatta(Novice)

March 29 – April 1 – San Diego Crew Classic (Varsity Girls)

March 31-April 1 – Husky Open (Varsity Boys and Girls)

April 10 – All Parent meeting 6:30 pm

April 14-15 – Lake Stevens Sculling or Scrimmage (Everyone)

April 27- 29 – Brentwood (Everyone)

May 5^th – Opening Day (Select Varsity)

May 8^th- All Parent Meeting 6:30 pm

May 17-20 – Regionals (Everyone)

May24 – End of Year Banquet(Everyone)

June 6-10 – Nationals (Select Varsity)

A few notes:

*Practices are 4 -6:30 pm for all rowers.

*Rowers should talk to coach about ergomania participation.

*Please note the meetings. This year we will have combined novice and varsity parent meetings with breakout sessions for each group at the end of the meeting.

*On March 10, we have scheduled a Pocock Junior Community Event. Please mark your calendars! It will be a great opportunity to meet and mix with the other parents before the craziness of the season really kicks in.

The cost of this spring season will be $710. This includes local regattas but not the travel regattas.

Paperwork can be downloaded now. Please complete and submit it and payment to the office before February 6^th if possible.

Hello Pocock Parents!

A quick reminder that we have an all parent meeting tomorrow night (Tuesday October 11) at 6:30 at the boathouse. We will be covering the Portland regatta among other things. This year the Portland regatta weekend is very different than it has been in the past so please attend the meeting to get all of the details.

This is a great opportunity to bring in those procurement forms that you have for the auction. Kerri will be on hand to collect and thank you for your work on this! We will also be selling tickets to the auction so you can get everything taken care of in one meeting!

Hello Pocock Parents!

Well, fall is definitely upon us now and with it brings great Head racing! Hopefully everyone made it over to Gasworks to view the Tail of the Lake regatta last weekend. Official results can be seen here:

The Pocock team did very well overall and everyone should be very proud of the results as well as the outstanding effort that was put forth by our rowers. The Pocock Junior Women in the Varsity 8 and the JV 8 had particularly exciting races, passing multiple boats and taking first place in both races. Congratulations to everyone!

It’s time for the parents to see how large of an impact we can make on the Auction! The ideas are out there, as well as the forms...but we have received so few! If there are forms sitting on the kitchen counter, or ideas discussed, now is the time to get them into the Auction committee!

Also, I believe that a few of the coaches have arranged scrimmages between individual Pocock groups and other Seattle boat clubs. These scrimmages are an informal opportunity to get some competitive experience. If your rower is participating, he or she will come home and tell you the details.

The next parent meeting is October 11 which is next Tuesday! At this meeting, we will discuss all logistics for travel to Portland regattas. The Portland regatta weekend is very different than it has been in the past so even if you have done that regatta weekend before, please plan to attend. There are a lot of changes and we need lots of volunteers to make this seamless.

One last request – if you know that you are going to attend the whole weekend in Portland and are willing to carry some cargo, please respond to me. We need a few larger rigs to carry food tent supplies.

Hello Pocock Parents!

A few updates and reminders.

1. There is a regatta this weekend. It is called Tail of the Lake and here is a link with information about the course. http://www.lakeunioncrew.com/rowing-club/race-regatta/tail-of-the-lake-2010.html

Our rowers depart from our boathouse.

Your rower will come home with specific race information from his coach about what time he or she needs to be at the Boathouse.

For those who are new, the best viewing is at Gas Works park.

2. A heads up about our travel regatta this fall. We will be going to Portland (unless your rower is one of the 2 boats going to California) on October 29 and 30. We will leave early on the 29^th, race on the river, sleep at hotel and then we will go to Vancouver lake the next morning and race again. We won’t be back in Seattle until the evening of the 30^th.We will have 2 full days of racing this year!

So please mark your calendars! We will be sending out the calls for volunteers for food tents etc once we have finished planning and working out the logistics(soon).

3. We are changing the ALL PARENT MEETING date to Tuesday October 11 at 6:30. Please plan to attend.

4.       1PRC Auction update!

Already the days are shorter. That can only mean one thing:

In the true PRC tradition, we've set an ambitious goal: $100,000 to upgrade equipment and facilities at the boathouse for the more than 400 rowers – masters to juniors, beginners to Olympians – who call PRC home. Our dinner has been upgraded – no more buffet lines! A professional Auctioneer has been secured!

November 11 is a short six weeks away.

We need your help to realize our fundraising goals. We're asking every crew, every boat…every PRC rower to donate an item to help our cause. We've already procured many great items, but take a quick look at the list below. Do you have a line on something that would make a great silent auction item? If you do, we want it for our tables! Don't have a line on anything – your donation to underwrite the costs of the event would be more than welcome!

A few reminders and updates:

· There is a Novice /New Family Meeting this Thursday at 6:30 at the Boathouse. Please plan to attend. Mentor families should also plan on being present and we will make the introductions during a social after the meeting.

· The Pocock Rowing Center team store is now open. At the JL Team Store site, you can use your own credit card to order required team uniform items as well as training gear. Everyone MUST get their order in by midnight (PST), September 23rd. If you miss the store closing date, you will need to order your uniform as an individual. For individual orders pricing and shipping will be different than a team purchase.

· Parking and Pick up! PLEASE do not double park and try to wait “just those few minutes” for your rower in the street. We really need everyone to park legally in the parking lot or on in a real space on the street. There is so much traffic and potential for an injury accident with our 100 rowers as well as Lake Union’s rowers being dismissed between 6:15 and 6:30. If the reader of this email is not the driver, please forward to the driver. Your attention to this issue is appreciated and thank you to those who are following the rules.

Thank you to those who attended the varsity parent meeting last night. It was fun to see everyone again and kick off another season!

· The varsity only is rowing this Sunday in Row for the Cure. The coaches will communicate with the kids about what time they need to be at Pocock. Hello Pocock Parents!

I hope everyone is well and looking forward to summer as the school year winds down.

A few fyi’s:

1. For interested rowers, there are some excellent rowing opportunities at Pocock this summer. Summer sessions are fun, without the pressure of the fall and spring seasons and a wonderful opportunity to hone on the water skills. Please check out the schedule at this link:

2. The boathouse has a team clean up scheduled for this Saturday June 18. We need kids to help out 9-11. Thank you!

3. On July 9^th, we have scheduled a massive boat dedication ceremony to christen our 7 new boats. Please join us for this event and learn more of the lore and tradition of rowing and our boathouse. A barbeque for everyone(with Matt’s famous ribs!) will immediately follow the dedication– Yahoo!

Thank you! Sadly, you will not be receiving weekly emails from me over the summer but look for them to begin again towards the end of August as we gear up for Fall.

This is the last call and reminder to rsvp on the evite invitation that was sent last Saturday for the Junior End of Year banquet. Please rsvp now so we know how many people to be prepared for.

We need volunteers to help us clean up after the event. The venue requires us to leave it clean with all food, table settings, decorations cleared. Please respond back if you can help out.

If you are bringing a dish to the event, please make sure to bring serving utensils and to have the item on servable dish, platter or whatever.

Hello Pocock Parents!

Only 3 more days until we leave for Vancouver and the US Rowing NW Junior Regionals. Very exciting!

Specifically, regarding Regionals:

1. Please see attachments labeled Parents Regionals and Packing list for up to date information on logistics. Please make sure your rower is at Pocock by 3:45 at the latest on Thursday.

2. Please remit the $260 per rower to the office as soon as possible. You may also just call Nat to authorize him to use your credit card on file. Thank you!

3. Attached are heat sheets. I want to put a disclaimer on these time and boat schedules. During a regatta, many things can happen that can cause times and rowers to change. Please use these only as a rough guide to the regatta. As the regatta progresses, we will have the most up to date information at the tent so check in often.

4. We are needing a Van driver to drive a group of rowers down on Thursday afternoon/evening and come back on Sunday. While we are in Vancouver, you will also be responsible to get your rowers to and from the race course. Please respond to me directly as soon as possible if you would love to help out in this way! ( I did this last year and am doing it again this year. It’s actually a lot of fun and really plugs you into the event and the team)

2. Kathleen is missing her cooler from Brentwood. It is a large rounded square cooler. It has a blue base with a white top and has a black handle in the back. The eggs were in it at Brentwood and the last of the food was in it for the journey home. Please respond if you have it or know where it might be.

3. Just a reminder that the End of Year Junior Banquet will take place next Thursday evening. You will receive an evite invitation with all of the details in the next few days. It is a Potluck and we are only half way there with food volunteers. Please email Susan Geiduschek at susan.geiduschek@seattlechildrens.org for more details about what is needed and if you would like to contribute a food item. Thank you and thanks to everyone who has already signed up!!

Pocock - Very important Update!!

Hello Pocock Parents!

Thank you to everyone who came to the meeting last night.

A few fyi’s and requests:

1. We are planning the Junior end of year banquet for May 26. It will be at 415 Westlake, a facility that can better accommodate our large number. It is a Potluck and we would like people to sign up for one of four food groups. They are Protein (meat or fish), Vegetables or Salads, Grain or Pasta, Dessert. All items should be able to be served cool and should be proportioned or sliced for easy serving. Please bring enough for 10 servings. The event will be a lot of fun so please mark your calendar. Start time hasn’t been announced yet but will probably be either 6 or 6:30. Please respond to me if you would like to sign up to make a dish and which category the dish is from.

2. Below is the information about Regionals. I will pass on a schedule as soon as it is announced. The rowers are expected to stay with the team until the end of the event. The finals are on Sunday and it is good for team unity to have everyone cheering the final rowers on as well as there is a lot of packing up to be done. Kids are encouraged to bring their homework to work on over the weekend.

3. For our bakers who sent treats up to Brentwood, all of the containers are at the boathouse. They are in a large plastic bin so please go through it or have your rower grab your containers.

4. As we have discussed, all rowers need to have a membership in US Rowing to participate in this regatta. The office has submitted everyone who needed a renewal or a brand new membership. The cost is $39 per rower and you may pay the office for this membership. Attached please see a list of rowers who the office has submitted. Everyone else to our best knowledge, is current.

5. We need 2 volunteers to work Friday morning shift with the regatta organizers. This is a tradition and requirement that each club contribute volunteers to assist in different capacities. If you would like to do this or would like further information, please contact Tiff Wood at nwjuniors@gmail.com. Also please copy me so I know we have contributed our share of volunteers.

Regionals

Transportation: Rented Vans driven by Volunteer Parents and Coaches

All Rowers should report to the Boathouse on Thursday May 19 at 3:45. There they will be checked in to their Van.

Your rower should be encouraged to pack responsibly. Cargo space is limited and they really don’t need a lot for this weekend.

It makes sense to pack a nutritious snack for the ride. The Vans will make a stop at a Subway or similar place on the way down but we have no formal dinner agenda.

Weather and Clothing

The way our weather has been, I would be prepared for rain as well as sun. The high at that time of the year is 60F and a low of 46F. Please make sure your rower has warm clothes and rain gear as well as sunscreen.

Accomodations

The kids are staying at the Heathman Hotel in Vancouver. http://www.heathmanlodge.com/

It is about 10-15 minutes from the course. They will be assigned rooms and usually sleep 4 kids to a room.

Food

We will be providing Friday breakfast and lunch, Saturday breakfast and lunch and Sunday breakfast and lunch. Parent Volunteers are welcome to eat gratis during their shift. Spectator parents are welcome to eat at the tent for $10 a day each. On Friday and Saturday evenings, the kids will be dining at Chevys and Beaches, respectively.

Parent Gathering

We have arranged to have a parent gathering at the Heathman hotel mezzanine on Saturday evening beginning at 7 pm. It is a cash bar set up and all parents are invited and encouraged J to attend.

What else to bring and not to bring

Please bring warm clothes, hats and sunscreen. Rowers should have a nice outfit to go out to dinner and should have appropriate cover ups for when they are not racing. Try and leave the electronics at home so they don’t get lost or worse. Don’t send too much money with the kids but a bit is good for T shirts or other Regionals souvenirs. There is a lot of time to hang out at the course. A book is nice to have.

What should parents bring

Watch the weather for appropriate clothing and footwear. If you have spectator chairs, bring those with umbrellas. Binoculars are nice to have.

US Rowing Memberships

Everyone must have valid memberships to participate in this event. If your rower is not current, the PRC will get the membership at the group rate and add the amount to your bill for regatta.

Pick up on Sunday night

Kids return on Sunday between 5-6 depending on traffic, last race etc. All rowers are expected to unload the boats once we get back to the boathouse.

Cost

The cost per rower is $260. This includes lodging, transportation, food (except for Thursday roadtrip dinner), regatta fees etc. It does not include US Rowing Membership.

Hello Pocock Parents!

Unbelievably, our last regatta of the season is right around the corner. The NW Junior Regionals are in Vancouver Washington and are on May 19-22. This regatta is the culmination of this year’s work by our rowers and coaches and is very exciting and very important. For the Varsity rowers, it is the qualifying event for the US Rowing Nationals in June.

It is also completely different than Brentwood in terms of logistics, transportation, lodging etc. To that end, we have scheduled a parent meeting next Tuesday May 10 at 6:30. We would like to see at least one representative from every family at the meeting.

One additional note about Regionals. Since Regionals is a USRowing Sponsored event, all rowers must have current and active membership in USRowing. This membership is $45 but we get a little bit of a break if we submit all rowers together for membership and this includes renewals. If your rower is current and does not need to sign up or renew, please let me know ASAP so I can take him or her off the list. The membership is not optional if your rower is going to participate at this event. We will add the cost of the membership to the cost of the trip for each rower.

Other announcements:

*If your rower came home from Brentwood with items and clothing that are not his/hers(which is totally understandable given the jumble at the sleeping quarters), can the rower bring the items to the boathouse and put in the lost and found. I know of at least one splash jacket that has gone missing and those jackets are pricey pieces of apparel!

*The end of year banquet has been scheduled for May 26. We will provide more details on that later but please put it on your calendars as it is a really wonderful event. Rower and parents are invited.

* This Saturday is Boating Season Opening Day. Pocock is throwing a Party. Parents are invited to attend the PRC ‘Derby Day’ party after Opening Day Races and festivities. Cost is $10 for food, $10 for alcoholic beverage. Kids are welcome to attend until 2pm, when the event becomes 21 and over.

* Thank you packets for the Erg-a-thon are done and heading home with the kids starting today. A list of donors & addresses, envelopes, thank you letter and stamps are included. Please have your rower send these out with personal notes asap! An another congratulations on the effort – we’re almost to $28,000!

Well, first off, I was wrong about the weather at Brentwood. What a delightful surprise to have that much sunshine up there! I hope that everyone had a wonderful time watching the races, meeting other parents and relaxing in such beautiful surroundings.

Great news – the Pocock team placed fifth out of forty teams in the team competition. This is the highest that we have ever placed in the standings and is really a testament to the hard work of our junior rowers and coaches and all of the support that they receive from our great group of parents. We want to thank everyone who was involved and helped to make this a successful event. I would like to single out a few people who worked tirelessly at organizing “Camp Pocock North.”

*Thank you to Sandy Ellenbogen, our food tent and nutrition coordinator for all of that coordination, planning, corralling, strenuous physical labor etc that it took to feed over 100 people for three days!

*Thank you to Kathleen Brown for overseeing the event and always looking for the best way to do things that will make the most people happy.

*Thank you to Casey White, Randi Niemer, Paul Sorenson and Rebecca Brocard for chaperoning our dear rowers and getting them safely from one place to another.

*Thank you to Bernie Paul for his extraordinary efforts at getting Camp Pocock North sited in the great spot that it was in (next to the water!!)and setting it all up.

We will be gearing up for our last big regatta this year at The NW Junior Regionals. This is going to take place May 19-22 in Vancouver Washington. I will send out more planning information shortly but please mark your calendars and plan to join us at this great event!

One final note– if rowers are missing items, we took home 3 bins of “lost and found” items. They will be at the boathouse today and rowers should claim their lost items as soon as possible.

Hello Pocock Parents!!!

With Brentwood quickly approaching, we are trying to secure all of our volunteers that we need to feed our team of hungry rowers.

We really need a lot of Mom and Dad power to pull off an event of this size with the finesse and healthfulness that we all expect for our rowers. This is also a GREAT way to get to know other parents and become more entrenched in our Pocock family!

Please look through the list below and respond back to me with the shift you would like to work. I have tried to put the expected start times and approximate finish times for each shift. Please know that these are estimates and are very race and weather dependent. (Please be patient on that issue)None of the work is difficult or stressful or requires major cooking skill. Hello Pocock Parents! Hope everyone is enjoying our sunshine while it lasts!

Updates and Reminders for this week:

· The Brentwood trip is fast approaching! Please submit payment for this event as soon as possible to Nat in the office. The trip cost is $250.00. This is $15 more than last year due to cost increases in gas, food and entry fees.

· We need a Dad willing to go up with Bernie Paul and stake out our place and set up the tent. Dad must be willing to leave early enough to catch the 7 am Tsawwassen ferry on Thursday. Please respond if you can volunteer for this very important job!

· We had some extra food left over from last weekend’s regatta in Lake Stevens. Most of it can be put to the Brentwood regatta but we have extra bananas. If you are a baker and would like to make banana bread etc for Brentwood, please take the bananas that are inside the door at the Boathouse.

· We are trying to round up volunteers for next year. We have a few positions available on our stewards committee that have responsibilities attached to them.

They are:

2 food tent head organizers – one for local regattas and one for away regattas.

Volunteer coordinator – someone who will rally the troops and coordinate volunteer activities as needed.

Team communication coordinators - People to handle specific communication issues as they arise for individual group. We would really love someone to help with novices specifically.

Hi Pocock Parents!

Thanks to everyone who attended the meeting last night. Following are notes from the meeting and about all things Brentwood.

Please everyone remember to use the parking lot for parking and waiting for your rower. Do not pull up and double park in front of boat house. We have had a few near accidents out there and really, we all need to help get this situation to a safe place.

Please talk to your rower or your rower’s coach about any changes in arrival times at Lake Stevens this Saturday. Otherwise, it is expected that rowers will arrive at Lake Stevens at 6:30 am.

If you would like to take a larger role in our parent stewards group, please email me back. We have a few positions opening up for next year.

Brentwood

Transportation: Victoria Clipper and Bus

All Rowers should report to Pier 69 at 6:30 am on Friday April 29. There they will be checked in.

Your rower may carry no more than two bags. They can bring a maximum of one carry-on and one checked bag. They must carry whatever they bring on board - so encourage them to pack responsibly. The carry-on should include their unisuit and anything they will need to get into a boat. If you are going to Brentwood, consider taking your rower's sleeping bag, etc. in the car with you -- it will simplify things on the Clipper.

Coxswains should not check luggage but give it to Liz at Victoria Clipper check in to bring to Brentwood.

Disembarking in Victoria – we will need to assign the rowers to groups that disembark in a certain order. This is due to the race schedule and the need to get the early racers up to Brentwood quickly. Coxswains are part of the early disembarkation group so they may go to coxswain meeting and get weighed in.

It makes sense to pack a nutritious breakfast/early lunch for the Clipper. Although "food" is served on the boat - it can be expensive and a little random.

Proper Identification is a must. Your rower will not be allowed to board without either passport or enhanced drivers license if 16 or older or a birth certificate if under 16. The permission forms should have been filled out at the beginning of the season. You will be contacted individually if the permission slips/waivers are not in order.

Weather and Clothing

The way our winter has been continuing, I would plan for some rain. The high at that time of the year is 57F and a low of 40F. Please make sure your rower has warm clothes. The rowers often have to row out to the waiting area before the start 45 minutes before the race. It gets chilly so a jacket, long sleeve shirt under their unisuit, long spandex and wool socks are highly recommended. Two sets of these items are further recommended as one set may get wet. If possible, please have these items made from synthetic fibers or wool, not cotton. If you would like to watch the weather report. Go to weather .com and type in cowichan bay bc Canada. (I am just guessing on weather and looking at past history. Maybe I will be wrong about the weather and it will be sunny and 70F)

Accomodations

The kids are staying in a gymnasium. They need to bring sleeping bags, air mattresses, pillows and whatever else will make them comfortable. If possible, single air mattresses for single rowers, and double/queens for two (same gender only!)so we don’t take up tons of room. Also, kids take showers in communal shower rooms separated by gender. Some kids are more comfortable taking showers in their bathing suits so they should bring their suits if that is the case.

Food

We will be providing Friday light lunch, Friday dinner, Saturday breakfast, lunch and dinner, Sunday breakfast and lunch to go for the rowers. Parent Volunteers are welcome to eat gratis during their shift. Spectator parents are welcome to eat at the tent for $10 a day each.

The rowers will have time in Victoria before the ferry departs on Sunday. Please give them money to eat in Victoria or on ferry on Sunday evening.

What else to bring and not to bring

Please bring warm clothes. Try and leave the electronics at home so they don’t get lost or worse. Don’t send too much money with the kids but a bit is good for T shirts or other Brentwood souvenirs and Sunday afternoon in Victoria.

What should parents bring

Comfortable , warm clothes and waterproof boots/ shoes. If you have spectator chairs, bring those with umbrellas. Binoculars are nice to have.

One note for parents and rowers. If you can, turn off your international roaming on your phone. Do not get in the habit of calling your child to find them at Brentwood. If you do that, you will be faced with a huge and shocking bill. Discuss cell phone usage with your rower before leaving home so he or she is aware of billing situation while in Canada.

Hello Pocock Parents!

A few items to cover today:

This weekend is the Lake Stevens Sculling Regatta. All groups are scheduled to participate. At this moment, the rowers are expected to arrive at Lake Stevens by 6:30 am. Even though the race doesn’t begin until 8 am, they need to unload and rig the boats, go to Coxswain meeting etc. The coaches may change the arrival time and will communicate with rowers if they do change the arrival time. (Times are determined by race schedule which has not been released yet) Also, please note that if your rower time is changed, it does not mean that other rowers’ arrival times are changed – again, very race schedule dependent.

Other fun facts:

The food tent will have the usual assortment of healthy snacks and warm drinks. We will also have sandwiches for lunch for the rowers. Could you lend a hand? Our Food Tent Gurus, Sandy Ellenbogen and Kathleen Brown are looking for volunteers to help at tent . Please contact them directly.

In past years, rowing has started at 8:00 am. The last race has been scheduled for 5:30 – and if we're successful in the heats, we'll be in the finals at the end of the day. As soon as we have the schedule, I will send out an email so you can see what to possibly expect. Please address specific rower and boat questions to your rower’s coach.

MAJOR REMINDER!!! There is a Brentwood meeting this Wednesday evening at 6:30 at the Boathouse. We will cover all things Brentwood.

One important issue for Brentwood is the identification needed at border crossing.

If your rower is 16 or over, he or she needs a passport or enhanced driver’s license. If he or she is under 16, a birth certificate will suffice.

One request, if anyone has walkie talkies that you wouldn’t mind lending to coaching staff for Brentwood, we would really appreciate it. Please reply to me if you will be able to lend a set or two.

A few updates:

1. The parent meeting to discuss Regionals logistics has been changed to Tuesday May 10^th at 6:30 at the Boathouse.

2. The Lake Stevens Sculling Regatta that was previously scheduled for Saturday April 9^th has been moved to Saturday April 16^th.

3. We need a few volunteers to chaperone the rowers on the Brentwood trip. Duties include riding roundtrip on the Victoria Clipper and Bus and sleeping in the room with the rowers. You will need to bring a sleeping bag as the accommodations are on the gym floor. In exchange, your transportation and lodging fee are taken care of by Pocock Rowing Center! A great way to bond with the kids!! Just reply back if you are interested.

5. Great job on the Ergathon funds collection thus far! We have already collected over $10,370. As you know these very important funds will be used for the purchase of a new boat and to fund our scholarships. FW: Pocock Regatta Update and Special Update for Novice Parents

Hello Pocock Parents!

Thank you for a great showing last weekend at the Ergathon! Kids did great and we will update you on funds collected as they come in.

This coming weekend is the Green Lake Regatta. The Varsity girls are not participating in this event.

A few things:

1. As the event takes place all day but your rower is not rowing in more than one or a few races, it is extremely important that your rower keep in good communication with his/her coach regarding time he/she needs to report to Regatta, his/her race time etc.

2. The coaches will give the rowers their times sometime this week as the boat line ups are decided.

3. Parents should drop their rower off at Green Lake at the assigned time. The rower should look for Pocock staff and/or find the tent area to gather with the team. The tent area will be somewhere near the grandstand on the south west side of the lake.

4. There will not be a full service food tent so kids should bring something to eat or money to buy food.

There will be an information sheet available regarding the upcoming Lake Stevens regatta, this weekend.

Following is an update from the Novice coaching staff regarding a special scrimmage that they have arranged. This is only for Novice Rowers as the Varsity rowers are involved in other regattas that weekend.

Hey there novice parents!

The novice coaching staff has arranged for a duel with the Mount Baker team on Sunday, April 3rd. Both boys and girls teams will be participating and the event should take roughly 2 1/2 hours. We are planning on doing several pieces out in Portage Bay, so unfortunately parents and supporters will be unable to watch.

Please mark your calenders!! We will be talking to your rowers about all the details, so be sure to stay in communication with them as well. If you have any questions regarding the duel, please direct your emails to the novice girls coaching staff.

Erg-a-thon update and FAQ!

Parents,

Our Erg-a-thon letters are out, and now the fingers are crossed! We’ve had a number of questions regarding the Erg-a-thon from our Novice parents, and we’ve put together a FAQ document that is available on the Jr. Blog that will answer those questions. http://www.pocockcenter.blogspot.com/

One of the most common questions we’ve received is “Can we pursue gifts through email?” Absolutely!

The Erg-a-thon donation page www.pocockrowingcenter.org/junior-ergathon.html is proving to be VERY, VERY EFFECTIVE!!! The office staff has been sharing the page with friends, family, alumni and the PRC community - - - - this effort has brought in over $500 in donations so far. Take a few moments and see if this tactic works for you; there are people out there who would be excited at the opportunity to support your child’s rowing experience. REACH OUT TO THEM! WE NEED ALL THE SUPPORT WE CAN FIND!

If you have the ability to send out EVEN more requests, letters and forms are available on the blog as .pdf’s. The smallest amount of activity can have a big impact at the boathouse.

As you all know, people live busy lives. To ensure those letters don’t sit on the kitchen table, please schedule a follow up phone call or email to potential donors to remind them of the request. A quick conversation can turn a few cents of paper and ink into racing boats and scholarships!

Thank you all so much for your work and continued support. The generous involvement of the PRC parent community has been so important in creating amazing experiences for kids over the last few years. Without your efforts, the team wouldn’t be where it is today.

Fundraising has a direct impact on every rower at the boathouse. It’s
worth it! We believe in what we do, which is why we provide others
with the opportunity to give.

Erg-a-thon FAQ’s:

What is the Erg-a-thon?
• The Erg-a-thon is a fundraising effort for the Pocock Rowing Center Jr.
Team. The athletes commit to performing a tough athletic task to
demonstrate their commitment to success, and ask for family and friends
to support that commitment with a donation.

Why do we have to send out donation letters?
• The cost for boats, oars, and other necessary equipment is not covered by the seasonal dues. A brand new 8+ oared shell will cost upwards of
$36,000! Each set of oars is almost $3000! In order to keep the team on
the water, we have to raise money for equipment.
• The funds raised will also be used to support the scholarship efforts at the
Pocock Rowing Center. Each year between 5-10 athletes receive
assistance with the rowing dues.

Where is the event? Do parents need to attend?
• The event will be held at University Village, close to the Ben Bridge
jewelry store. Parents are definitely welcome! Bring along anyone who
would like to see your athlete hard at work!

When is my son/daughter rowing?
• There is a signup sheet at the boathouse, and we have asked the athletes
to communicate those times to their parents. If you haven’t received the
information from your rower, please contact the office during business
hours and we’ll let you know!

How many letters are expected to be sent?
• We’ve asked that each athlete send out 15 letters. IF each athlete were
able to generate 15 x $25 donations, we’d raise almost $36,000 for
equipment and scholarships!

Fundraising is tough for our family right now, what are our options if we choose not to participate?
• Finding the time and energy to invest in fundraising is difficult, but every
rower in the boathouse currently enjoys the benefits from our previous
fundraising efforts.
• We hope that each family puts in some creative work to see what kind of
an impact they can have. Professionals that your family visits often
provide support for youth athletics (doctors, dentists, orthodontists, etc.).
Businesses that you and your family frequent are also good options for
donation letters.
• If now isn’t a good time to make an impact, we hope that you can support
our Auction event in October by attending, procuring, or volunteering!

FW: Pocock Ergathon Update

Hello Pocock Parents!

I just wanted to bring you up to date on what is happening with the Ergathon. Your rowers should have brought home 15 mailing labels last week. They were supposed to fill in the mailing information of who they are intending to send their ergathon letters to and they are supposed to bring back the completed labels today. At practice today, they will complete the letters and the office will post the letters to the intended donors. If your rower did not complete this task, you may send the appropriate names and addresses to Nat Hopper at

info@pocockrowingcenter.org.

The ergathon itself will take place from 10-4 this coming Saturday March 12 at University Village in the center playground area (near World Wrapps and Ben Bridge). The coaches and kids are working out the times that each rower needs to row as they each have to row for one hour and not at the same time. Please ask your rower what time he or she has picked or was assigned.

We are hoping to raise $25,000 to pay for a new boat so your help with this activity is most appreciated!

On a side note, as it starts to rain again please make sure your rower is bringing the proper clothing to row in. The boats will go out if it is raining as long as it isn’t windy.

Hello Pocock Parents!

Spring season is upon us! Practice for all teams begins on Monday February 7^th at 4 pm. If you have not submitted your rower’s paperwork and fee, please bring it in on Monday.

For those needing a notary to notarize the page giving permission for your rower to travel to Canada, there will be a notary present from 5:30 til whenever needed on Monday February 7^th, Tuesday February 8^th and Tuesday February 15^th. (The notary wasn’t available on February 9^th, sorry)

For those needing uniforms and performance clothing, the JL store is online NOW and will shut down on February 14^th. Please get your orders in quickly to ensure that your rower has a spiffy looking uniform. Following is the link:

Hello Pocock Parents! Believe it or not, the Spring Season is right around the corner. The Center and our coaching staff are in high planning mode getting ready for all of the athletes to return. We have a jam packed season ahead so we thought we’d share the calendar and give a few fyis about upcoming events.

The first event on our calendar is technically a few days before the Spring Season begins. The NW Ergomania is scheduled for February 5^th at Connolly Center at Seattle University. This is a required event for all Varsity/JV athletes and a recommended event for all Novice athletes. The girls should plan on arriving by 9:30 on Saturday morning February 5^th and the boys should plan on a 10 am arrival. Both groups should be done by 12 Noon but please be flexible with pick up timing as events can start late, transitions can longer than anticipated etc. We encourage parents/family as spectators! It is a wild and fun event to watch.

Spring Season Practice begins Monday February 7^th. Please, please, please make sure paperwork is completed and submitted with payment before the 7^th so we know who is going to be participating. Please note that there is a page that needs to be notarized. We will have a notary present from 5:30 – 6:15 (or whenever) on February 7^th and 8^th so you can have this page notarized when you pick up kids from practice.

All Parent Meeting for Spring Season will take place on February 9^th at 6 pm. We will review the season plan and answer questions about logistics. We will be asking for volunteers to help with food tent and other assorted jobs so please check your calendars to see what you can help with! Right after this meeting, there will be a short Varsity Girls Parent meeting to discuss the San Diego Crew Classic.

The Novice All Parent Meeting will take place on February 15^th at 6 pm. We will review the Novice season plan and discuss logistics. We will need volunteer help for the regattas so please check calendars and be prepared for the sign up sheet!

For those rowers needing new performance wear and uniforms, the JL store will go live for online ordering on February 7^th. There will only be a window of 7 days to order to be able to get uniforms in time for regattas. We will send out reminders and also let you know when JL will be coming to the Boathouse to measure anyone who wants to order a uniform.

Hello Pocock Parents!

Well it’s raining ( pouring ) again but we sure lucked out in Portland with that beautiful day! I hope that everyone had fun and enjoyed the regatta.

We owe many thanks to the following people who really helped to make the weekend a success.

Thank you to our food tent organizers, Sandy Ellenbogen, Kathleen Brown, Bernie Paul and Rommie Callaghan for getting things organized, prepared, transported and set up.

Thank you to all of our helpers who pitched in and helped set up, break down and serve our hungry rowers - Scott DeMartine, Peter Thompson, Celia Morant, Cate Palmer, Chip Painter, Rommie Callaghan, Leigh Callaghan, Geoff Wood, Jill Wood, Daren Nitz, Tim Dore, Karen Painter, Mike Fletcher and Hang Yee Chin. I know that were many folks who came by the tent and pitched in – a heartfelt thanks to all of you as well.

Thank you to all of our bakers who contributed all of the delicious baked goods. You all were great and the baked goods were excellent. I am sorry that I can’t list your names here - I misplaced my baker list.

Thank you also to our carpool drivers who not only drove to Portland and back but also ferried their charges to dinner, to the boathouse etc. You guys did a great job and we really appreciate the effort to keep track of all the kids. Pocock Portland Trip

Hello Pocock Parents!

This email is regarding the Portland Fall Classic arrangements.

There are three attachments to this email that you should download and/or print if you are helping at, driving to or attending this event (which is next weekend!)

The Portland Fall Classic includes specifics with addresses and phone numbers of lodging, Portland boathouse, Saturday evening dinner etc.

The Portland Fall Classic Specifics includes our itinerary and directions to hotel, restaurant, boathouse etc.

The Carpool Chart is the final driver list with spaces to indicate how many rowers each car can take. The list with kids will be published on Wednesday.

A few notes:

1. We will expect all drivers and kids to report to the boathouse on Saturday October 30 between 11:30 – 11:45. We will check everyone into their carpools with departure set for 12 Noon.

2. Drivers should go directly to the Portland Boathouse so that the kids can unload the boats and rig them up.

3. When the rowers are dismissed, Drivers should then get their rowers to the hotel for room assignment.

4. Dinner is at 6 pm and Drivers are responsible to ensure rowers get there. However, taking a street car or walking may be possibilities to transport the rowers. I think this will be weather dependent and that we can play this by ear.

5. On Sunday, Drivers are responsible to ensure that Rowers get to course on time.

6. Rowers need to bring their things to the course as we will be checking out Sunday morning.

7. After the race, rowers de-rig boats and when they are dismissed by coaches, carpools may leave to go back to Seattle.

8. Rowers need to report to boathouse when they get back to Seattle. This is really important as we cannot leave the boats outside on Sunday (Halloween) night. They will put the boats back in the boathouse and will be dismissed as soon as possible by the coaches.

9. Please bring in a check for $80 and give to office as soon as possible.

10. The rest of the JL order is expected on Thursday at the boathouse.

If you are able to drive and take your rower and a few friends, it would really help out and help to keep the cost of the regatta weekend at $80. If we can’t get enough places in cars, we will need to rent a van.

Food – I have listed the volunteers that are helping in different ways with food whether it be at the event in food tent or providing baked goods. I am going to assume that everyone can do what I have listed. If not, please email me so I can get a substitute.

Good Morning Pocock Parents!

This email is meant to recap last night’s Parent meeting.

The agenda and Portland Classic Fact Sheet are included as attachments.

1. Portland Fall Classic is October 30-31. We will depart from Pocock at 12 Noon on Saturday October 30 and drive to Portland. Once we arrive, the kids need to rig the boats. After rigging, we will have dinner together at Macaroni Grill and then head back to the Hotel for a good night’s sleep.

Races begin at 8:30 Sunday morning and go until 2 pm. After the races, kids will reload the trailer and we all drive back to Seattle. The kids will need to spend an hour putting the boats back into the boathouse and will be dismissed around 6:30. The anticipated cost for the weekend is $80 per rower. This includes lodging, dinner at Macaroni Grill, breakfast and lunch on Sunday.

The attached fact sheet has all of the basics and there will be a more detailed summary coming to you in a week or so.

We Need Help in the following areas:

Drivers willing to drive rowers to Portland. Please respond to this email and let me know your name, how many rowers you can accommodate and your cell phone number and email.

People willing to help at the food tent especially setting up and breaking down. Please respond to this email if you are interested in helping at the tent.

People willing to bake healthy snacks and treats for the rowers. Please respond to this email with your name and email.

2. Fundraising Update

We raised over $84,000 at the auction. Huge thank yous to all who helped out and participated !

Next year’s auction will be Saturday October 15^th.

We have Ergathon, a juniors only fundraiser, coming sometime next spring.

We have a PRC cookbook fundraiser coming up.

We have a junior parent social fundraiser coming up either March 3rd or 4^th.

3. The performance wear clothing order from JL will definitely be here by October 20 and will be distributed at the boathouse to the kids.

Pocock Junior Parent Meeting

Hello Pocock Parents!

Just a quick reminder that there is an all parent meeting on Wednesday October 13 at 6 pm at the Boathouse. We plan to cover the upcoming regattas including the Portland trip, the Auction results (yay!), clothing update and future fundraising.

Fyi, the Portland regatta will be October 30 – 31. We will depart on the 30^th (Saturday) around 12Noon and come back late Sunday afternoon. We will need driver volunteers who are willing to take kids as we are trying to get all rowers down there in carpools. We will have all additional information for you tomorrow.

Pocock and the Everett Regatta

Hi Pocock Parents!

A last word about this Sunday’s regatta up in Everett.

It is the Rower’s responsibility to know when they are to be at the race course. Please check with him/her today after practice to make sure he/she understands the coach’s instructions about this.

It is the Rower’s responsibility to get to & from the race course.

Please have your rower well fed for breakfast. Rower should bring water and snack if he/she would like. Also, bring $5 for lunch if you’re sticking around the race course for lunch served by Everett Club!

After rower’s race, rower should expect to help load boats back on trailer and should get instruction from coaches as to when he/she needs to help unload boats at Pocock. (Most likely later Saturday afternoon)

Hi Pocock Parents!

Thank you to everyone who participated in the PRC auction last weekend. It was a great event and the results will be released as soon as everything is tallied. There are pictures from the event currently posted on the Pocock website.

Following is information as we know it about this weekend’s regatta in Everett.

Ask your rower’s coach for the time that they are to be in Everett. If possible, try to set up carpools within your child’s boat.

7am Coxswains River tour

8am Registration

8:30am Cox Meeting

9am Flight #1 launch at 9am and race at 9:45am – Novice 8+’s

Flight #2 launch at 10am and race at 10:45am – Varsity and JV 8+’s

Flight #3 Launch at 11am and race at 11:45am – 3JV and 4+’s/Quads

11:30am BBQ lunch begins

Last year, lunch was grilled sausages with salad sampler (Caesar and Potato) snacks, desserts and drinks $5 donation

We are going to ask the rowers to eat a good breakfast at home and bring their water bottles, snacks, power bars or whatever else they need for a good race. We will have water and hot drinks but no food. If they choose not to eat the BBQ lunch then they need to bring their own food. We felt that it was impolite to set up a tent when the Everett boathouse puts on this big lunch for everyone to share.

Hello Pocock Parents!

Unbelievably, we are only 8 days away from our first auction. The response has been overwhelmingly positive from the entire center which is wonderful to see.

A bit of “heads up” information:

1. Seats are filling FAST and there are only 30 left. If you said or just told someone you were attending but have not paid your money – YOU DO NOT HAVE A SEAT. You need to pay via Pay Pal on line OR better yet, take a check into the office and pay directly so you know that you will have a seat. Deadline for this is today. Word on the street is that there are around 16 Ancient Mariners making reservations today so don’t delay. This is your last chance and we want you there.

2. The Catalog for the items should go Online today, Friday.

3. Volunteers are needed to prepare bidder items for the auction. These volunteer opportunities will be Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. If you have time to help – WE NEED YOU! You could be helping to put together 90 bid packets, or assembling catalogs or putting together bidder folders. These things should take around 2 hours max. Please call or email the office and tell them that you can help.

At the Auction itself: we need 5 people who will take short shifts at the Jr. Wine Upgrade table and at the PRC clothing table. Let us know if you will take a shift.
Post Auction: the center will be sending out hundreds of thank you letters. We need people to help fold the letters, stuff the envelopes, lick the envelopes and put the stamps on them. Any and all assistance for this would be greatly appreciated.
